About Rescue Exchanges
South Sudan's official and parallel market exchange-rate transparency portal, with reference rates for East African currencies.
Five questions every figure answers
- What is the rate? Buy, sell and mid/reference, where the source publishes them. “—” means not published. Nothing is filled in.
- Whose rate is it? The institution or source is named next to every figure.
- When was it updated? The date, and time where recorded, in Juba time. Figures older than 30 days are marked outdated.
- What market does it represent? One of the market types below.
- Has it been verified? Shown with a verification label.
Market types
- Official / Reference
- Rates published by the Bank of South Sudan. Shown as the official / reference rate.
- Commercial bank
- Buy and sell rates displayed by a named commercial bank.
- Forex bureau
- Buy and sell rates displayed by a named forex bureau.
- Unofficial market
- Informal parallel-market (street) rates. Never presented as official, and never averaged with official rates.
- Reference feed
- Daily reference rates from a third-party data provider. Useful for regional comparison; not a dealing rate.
Verification and publishing
Information moves through Draft → Review → Verified → Published. Editors prepare records, and reviewers check the source before a rate is marked verified. Every rate record must have a currency, a value, a source, a market type and a date before it can be published.
- Verified
- Checked against its source by a Rescue Exchanges reviewer.
- Provider-submitted · verified
- Submitted by the institution itself, then checked by a reviewer.
- Unverified
- Published with its source, but not yet independently checked.
- Automated feed
- Received automatically from a third-party data provider.
Calculations
- Mid rate: the source's stated reference rate if it publishes one; otherwise the average of buy and sell, labelled “calculated”.
- Change: latest record compared with the previous record from the same source. Changes under 0.01% are shown as unchanged.
- Rankings: sorted from the latest verified record of each participating institution. Labels name the metric (e.g. “highest displayed buy rate”). No institution is called “best”.
- History: only stored records. Values are never estimated between dates.
- Commodities: shown as market indicators. No causal link to exchange rates is claimed.
Methodology notes
- Official rates
- Published by the Bank of South Sudan (BoSS). Updated by platform administrators when BoSS releases new circulars. These represent the central bank's official buy/sell rates.
- Street market rates
- Collected from licensed forex bureaus operating in Juba. These reflect the actual cash market. Rates may vary by 1-3% between providers depending on location, volume, and negotiation.
- Regional rates
- Sourced from open.er-api.com — a free exchange rate API that aggregates data from European Central Bank and other institutional sources. Updated daily.
- Important
- All rates are indicative. Actual rates at any forex bureau will depend on transaction size, counterparty, and market conditions at that moment. Always confirm the rate before transacting.
